We are celebrating Victoria day here In Canada today. and as usual it is raining!!
Your comments resonate, I agree whole heartedly with your observations and yes, the book is a hard read, especially from my end who has not read the Washington post, but I can understand the internal politics that it speaks of. Also I can see the interesting comment that the White Christian right see gifts to someone in power as tribute. I think that kind of thinking is more scarry than anything as it allows evil to prevail unchecked as it is considered "right and correct" to do it.
Oh, yes, I agree: the "divinely appointed" angle is like a get-out-of-jail-free card. Think how many monarchs have used this to destroy their people. And for those who are under that delusion, there is no escape. Utterly frightening. On a happier note, have a grand Victoria Day!
Thanks Susan, I am ploughing on with the book, What is happening now seems to be a repeat of 2016 . I keep telling myself, come the day of reconning HWSNBN will have a hard time explaining himself.!!
I appreciate the month off from Guerrilla Readers discussions because it is actually giving me the opportunity to read Collison. I'm not that fast of a reader (generally read at night) and was going to skip that book as I didn't think I could get it finished in one month. Glad I started it though....it's proving to be an interesting read!
I reread the chapter on the newspaper coverage of the Steele dossier last night--it felt like reading ancient history. But this morning's news about another ouster at CBS: a reminder that there's nothing "ancient" about Collision. We're living in the latest chapter.
I'm encouraged to report that the fight over the Library of Congress has just begun and looks to be a bipartisan battle in the Senate, at least. LoC has rallied with a battery of attorneys and their own institutional will power, to reject the new appointments. LoC is winning, so far.
Yes, there is a fight within the Library of Congress and their attorneys, and support from bipartisan members of the Senate, including the majority leader, John Thune. It's under the media radar at the moment, but suffice to say that the Trump appointees have not been allowed in the library.
Thank you, Kate--and agree that this is partly related to Musk's aim to scrape the LoC docs. I'm on the fence about that (scraping tokens doesn't seem to me to be an infringement). But it clearly can't be done before the courts rule on the copyright case. And the invasion of the LoC is absolutely unconscionable. Thanks for this update!
To me, as a librarian, the attempted takeover of LoC has ramifications far beyond the web scraping issue. Not to get into the weeds of: potential censorship of books submitted to the archives and the copyright office, access to sensitive and classified information in govt. files, disruption of essential services to libraries and patrons, and the lawless appointment of the executive branch to the legislative branch, BUT this EO has gone too far and I firmly believe it will lose in the courts and in Congress. I'm on the side of librarians who have a long history of fighting for freedoms.
Thanks for understanding, Susan, how personal this issue is for me. It's a literal slap in the face when I think of how critical LoC is to the nuts and bolts of the library profession, then how venerable a library, vital for our country's democracy. Grrrr......
This morning's update of "collision of power": Another media exec leaving because of Trump's attempts to silence critics: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/wendy-mcmahon-resigns-cbs-news-1236221276/

Oh, exactly: a repeat! It's not just a chronicle, but a catalog of forthcoming events.

Hi Kate,
Is there a backlash to the decision to change the head of the Library? Good on you guys, such blatant actions should be fought.
Yes, there is a fight within the Library of Congress and their attorneys, and support from bipartisan members of the Senate, including the majority leader, John Thune. It's under the media radar at the moment, but suffice to say that the Trump appointees have not been allowed in the library.
Oh good, Naughty boys and girls should be left at the door!!
Oh, funny! And they were. NO ADMISSION! (Even with shirts and shoes.)
Of course! There is a mystique about libraries.:)

Yes, this issue is huge! And it's so hard to pay attention to all that's happening. We need a roadmap. Thank you for yours!
