Sorry Susan, I can't find your reply to me on the Scorpio text .Since Microsoft have taken over my e mails I have had nothing but trouble. I'll try again later today (It is my early morning here) Thanks everyone for such interesting discussions
Hi Susan and gang, seems my comments of yesterday did not come through, but incase they did, Wonderful article Susan, If you cannot find what I wrote please let me know and I will try again.
Liz, I found your comment below, on my reply to Shellie. (Use search on your name "Liz" and you'll see it. (That's often how I navigate our conversations.) Always enjoy hearing from you!
I have just sent another reply that has disappeared half way through, so if you get another garbled note its from me. I think my computer is trying to tell me something.!
This is amazing Susan 😍. So much good information and I can't wait to dive into the workbook. 📚I also am in awe of your Aloe plant's happy healthy age. Wow!
So am I, Maria. That aloe is such a Scorpio--always renewing itself. And I do think that frog--a long-ago gift from one of my astrology/tarot students--has something to do with it.
Hi Susan and everyone, So enjoying this post and the comments! It is taking me to many memories which I will not drag you through, but thank you for stirring. I so appreciate the gardening associations with the both the sun and the moon as well as the houses of the zodiac. Though I have leaned heavily on the phases of the moon and the houses we are in for some many years, I must admit to being a light-weight with regard to the topic of astrology. Not even ever haven gotten around to having a chart worked up. ... sigh Still I am willing to glean what I can here and appreciate you all for sharing.
Re: the gardening associations. "Green people" have a special bond with planet Earth. The initiatives you have undertaken with your place--those are your own personal efforts to mitigate the negative impact we humans are having on the environment. Thank you for all you do!
Whew! I am so glad to shift into Scorpio season, although I never expected to hear myself say that. 😂Libra season was surprisingly challenging and I spent the entire month feeling overwhelmed. It was hard for me to keep my balance, but we made some interesting shifts in the garden for greater harmony and, to my eye at least, beauty. Now for the deep, regenerative work of Scorpio season. I transplanted out the perennial Thymes (that I had considered growing indoors) to the culinary herb plot yesterday and today I will plant Garlic. I'll be thinking of my most cherished woman friend since I was 15, who just happens to be a Scorpio Sun and has the world's greenest thumb ever. I think I will find time to write to her today.
I loved Finding The Mother Tree and read it twice in a row, crying both times. What a powerful book, and how I grieve the passing of Suzanne Simard. Entangled Life is brilliant! I have This Book is a Plant, which includes work by Merlin Sheldrake, Robin Wall Kimmerer, and others, at the top of my TBR stack. I just finished rereading The Darling Dahlias and the Cucumber Tree, which I will comment on in the appropriate newsletter, and am reading Widow's Tears currently. Queen Anne's Lace has held the number 1 spot for me in the China Bayle's mysteries for quite a while, but I wonder if Widow's Tears will challenge that? I love those parallel timelines and reading about a convergence of sorts when history impacts the present.
Okay, off to the garden soon and feeling grateful and ready for a time of composting, resting, and renewal. Thanks for this fabulous newsletter! 🦂♏💚
While you're planting that garlic, you might remember that it is a Mars herb (fiery, right?) I like to put it with Mars in Aries, but since Mars is the classic guardian of Scorpio, we can think of it there, too.
Thank you for mentioning This Book Is a Plant--I meant to get that when it came out and it slipped past me. I've just remedied that little oversight. 😍 And I know you'll be glad to hear that Suzanne Simard is still with us and (I believe) still teaching. Here she is on Instagram, recently: https://www.instagram.com/drsuzannesimard/
Thanks for asking, Diane. Yes, if you go to the menu bar at the top of the home page, you'll see "Growing Green with the Zodiac." https://susanwittigalbert.substack.com/ Click on that and you'll see the lot.
I agree with Kate's comment. Wonderful information and interesting ideas about Scorpio. There must be something more to Orion because he calls me, ever since I was a child. Maybe the orientation of the pyramids to his belt...something going on there. But I have been an astrologer for 50 years. And while I am looking at how astrology my shift from its patriarchal/hierarchincal origins in many ways, and while I also get a negative feeling when we call something the 'ruling' planet of a sign...I don't think I can land on 'guardian.' In what way does a planet guard a sign? Basically, the planet is chosen for its similarity to or resonance with the principles of the sign. Maybe resonant planet could work? I see language in astrology changing in ways I can accept (transformation as Scorpio) but other ways that seem artificial. Like 'architectrual' 'construction' -- a whole lecture recently on Mars in Cancer with this language. The basic principles don't change=the Taurus polarity?
Shellie, thank you for this thoughtful comment. I understand the reluctance to depart from long-established nomenclature. I want to answer you fully (you've put your finger on the heart of an issue I'm working out throughout the zodiac).
I'll have time this afternoon to work on this and get back to you here. Others may want to join in this discussion, too. It could take us in interesting directions.
Okay, here goes. This is part of a draft of a paper I'm working on and VERY drafty. 😗 But it will give you the general idea. At some point, I'll post the paper and open it for comments.
I’m working on a paradigm based in mundane astrology (the branch of astrology that focuses on global events, societal trends, and the collective experiences of nations, communities, and the planet as a whole). In this context, the planets of our solar system can be seen as serving a guardianship function for Planet Earth as it orbits the Sun and moves through the cosmic cycles of the zodiac.
From this point of view, each planet would play a guiding, corrective/protective, and energetic/energizing role not just for individuals but also for the collective experiences of Earth and all its lifeforms. The idea of planets-as-guardians may be easier to see when we're dealing with significant transits, but we can also think of each planet actively guiding Earth and its inhabitants through specific zodiac signs.
For example, when Earth is under the guardianship of Saturn during its transit through Capricorn, Saturn might not only bring corrective lessons of discipline and structure (we all know about that from personal experience) but also act as a protective force, guiding the global focus toward responsibility, governance, and long-term planning in a way that benefits the collective.
And that collective, as you can see from my primary focus (“Growing Green”) includes the Earth’s biosphere, that is, Earth-as-Gaia--Lovelock’s hypothesis that Earth’s ecosystems work together to regulate the atmosphere, oceans, climate, and other life-support systems. If we view planets as guardians, we can more clearly recognize their role in maintaining the delicate balance of these systems by influencing large-scale environmental cycles, such as climate patterns, ecological rhythms, and even the evolution of species. Of course, as the Sun moves through the zodiac, the Earth (and its lifeforms, including us!) is always in the opposite sign--we need to understand and work with this polarity.
Anyway, that's where I'm coming from, where I am, and where this is headed. I hope in that context, the term "guardian" might be more understandable.
That is an amazing perspective Like you I feel all is connected. How can we not be? We cannot survive without each other a complete circle which sadly at the moment seems to be very broken and the planets play a big part of that My hubby talks of the energy of each planet and gravitational waves which are a form of energy which influences our plant and the weather we have. Look forward to further comments.
I like this insight so much! I really resonated with the word 'guide' even more than 'guardian' in this draft. They're very similar. But I have been on many 'guided' plant walks and botanical boot camps, and that person who knew where we were going but was always willing to pause and answer questions, notice what was happening around us, and just be responsive to the natural world and the people journeying along, was a powerful image that came up immediately for me. The guide, in most cases, was "leading" and had a plan towards which we were all moving, but they were very present and adaptable, responsive and wanted to help us understand and learn as much as we were willing and able to take in.
Leenie, I agree--I think "guide" and "guardian" are synonymous here. We could say that Venus in Taurus is guiding us toward understanding what matters most, toward stability and groundedness. We could also think of Saturn as guiding us toward a recognition of limits, of boundaries--whether that's helpful is another matter, of course. 😗
Sorry, days got busy. I am pondering based on your focus. I'm sstill not sure I can see the planets as guiding us and being guardians of signs. The signs are there as the manifestation of the four elements and their three modes of expressing. These are natural law principles and what makes the explanation of the beginning of all things and how they progress. The signs are further modified by the house they fall on in the birthchart, be in essence they are these pure principles. The planets move around the zodiac at different speeds and put their characteristic into the sign they transit. Mars, now in Cancer, in simple terms brings heat and action into a sensitive water sign. Mars could be said to be uncomfortable in that sign and Cancer could have some difficulties, too. Together the desire nature is for emotional and literal security. To feel this, Mars wants to lead or dominate the home space and then to protect this space from unwanted intrusions. Physiologically, there can be irritations of all mucous membrane areas. Arguments arise over home food and family matters. Where is this showing Mars as a Guardian. Saturn in Cancer in a birth chart shows disappointment (understatement) in the family from birth. Obligations and restrictions. Not receiving nourishment. But absoultely, yes, wherever Saturn goes there are lessons to be learned. Neither Mars nor Saturn has qualities of expression that feel comfortable in Cancer. And that's why I see it as more of a planet resonating with a sign...and the original selection for 'rulership.' What I have issues with is the designation of hierarchy based on the positions without allowing the continuum of freqency. The Mars in Cancer, for instance, can be a good leader and get things to happen in the home. Saturn can also choose a home or build one with strong structural support. Or a person might bring career matters into the home...a home office...or feel a professional calling about home, food or family. Anyway...there's also an interesting facet of astrology/astronomy that looks at planets in terms of whether they are seen in the night sky. Right now, we have Taurus on the midnight MC, so Uranus is there and this lends a quality to our sleep/dreams. Jupiter in the night sky will expand our mental energy and consciousness. Then Mars rise higher in the night sky and bring that energy. More agitation or restlessness. Neptune and Saturn are night sky earlier and set not long after midnight. Sun in Virgo had them on the MC and I wonder how many of us had strange dreams with some level of anxiety then. So, again, an influence but not necessarily a guardian. But I will leave you to it for your purposes and honor your choices.
What a wealth of information with intersections across many ways of knowing and experiencing the zodiac during the sign of Scorpio! Impressive! As a Scorpio, I appreciate having the sign seen for its beneficial aspects since it's often perceived as scary. Thank you, Susan.
Kate, thank you for this (missed it yesterday!). I've wanted to do this project for years and am so glad to have a place (Substack) to share it. There's so much to learn! I just saw your subscription upgrade--thank you, thank you for that support. I'll look forward to your comments on the tarot work. I think you can see where I'm going with this (or where I *think* I'm going: using the zodiac as a frame for calling attention to the desperate plight of our planet.
Susan, I think it's a great direction because it's archetypal and symbolic, a layer of understanding that is so needed right now, transcendent.
Thank YOU for your support of my Substack projects! I'm excited to begin posting sections of my new book, THE FAIRY TALE HEROINE, this month. It feels liberating and fulfilling.
Scorpio Sun natives have been my most enduring teachers (guides?) in life, and although they could definitely mine the anger deep within me that almost NO ONE else could elicit, they remain my most cherished allies. My dearest woman friend since we were teenagers (I'm 63 now.) is a Scorpio Sun and I feel very fortunate to have her along for this wild ride we call Life. My Sun is in Capricorn, Moon in Taurus, and Aquarius ASC; I have no doubt that I've been a sore trial to her at times, but hopefully also a solid friend.
Lennie, that's quite a testament to the value of a Scorpio friend—as a lifelong dear ally. That says a lot about you and your staying power in your connection, that you wanted to learn even while resisting her insights or challenges on the "wild ride of Life." I've found Capricorns to be forever friends, loyal even when scratching their heads about my fits and starts. My sun is Scorpio, but I have Aquarius Moon and ASC, so I'm motivated to share what I know with the world. Ha!
So is my friend, and I have given the Stay In Your Lane lecture more than once (just as she has given the Shut Up and Dance one repeatedly to me😁). She has been a psychiatric nurse, working primarily with veterans with PTSD and is now working in administration. Her skills at not shying away from the dark places and shining her bright light into the spookiest and scariest haunts is absolutlely stellar. She is brilliant, but yes, sometimes I have to remind her to turn off the searchlight when I need a rest. Still, she is steadfast and I never doubt that she has my best interests at heart.💚
Your dear friend is not for the faint of heart, meeting the tragic consequences of war face-to-face. I love her already. It's great she has a channel for her searchlight and a healing one. You must give her a rest while asking for one. XO
"Teachers" is also a helpful way to think about this, IMO. I'm a Capricorn Sun, and I like to imagine Saturn setting up a curriculum for me (with a reading list and a string of quizzes--now, THAT makes me smile). Liz Green has been a helpful ally for me--I've read and reread her book on Saturn. 🤩
Thank you for your venture into this realm of astrology and its cycles throughout the year. It's a deep study, yet a grounded one as you provide a wide range of associations, from herbs to pagan rituals.
Me, too! I love that book! It was the first astrology book my first herbal mentor, Jeannine Parvati Baker, assigned me when I went through her Hygieia College when I was 27. I still have it. 🪐🐐♑

Sandy, the chart is as simple as putting your birth info into the boxes here: https://horoscopes.astro-seek.com/birth-chart-horoscope-online. It's interesting, fun, and (really) enlightening.

Oh, that is a huge relief. Either I mixed up the writer with someone else or I just flat out misheard that. Yay, more Suzanne Simard ahead!!
